Position: Post-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework - FEANTSA Calls on the EU to Stand Up for Homeless People
Recent EU policy developments have set the stage for greater ambition, action and impact when it comes to tackling homelessness in Europe. All players - EU institutions, Member States, regions, cities and stakeholders - have a role to play in turning these developments into action and progress. The future EU budget can and should help them fulfil this role. FEANTSA has released a position paper explaining why and how the post-2020 MFF can make a decisive contribution to the fight against homelessness in Europe. Read the position paper here.

Position: The European Labour Authority Can Be an Opportunity to Address Homelessness Among EU Citizens who Exercise the Right to Free Movement
Feantsa has replied to the European Commission Consultation on the establishment of the European Labour Authority and the European Social Security Number. Read the position here

 
NGOs Led by FEANTSA Write Letter about Growing Pressure on Social Service Providers to Participate in Return Procedures
A coalition of NGOs led by FEANTSA has addressed the increasing pressure on homeless services to categorise people according to their administrative status in a letter to European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, and Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, Marianne Thyssen. FEANTSA Director Freek Spinnewijn Discusses Housing First in Fondation Abbé Pierre Magazine
Fondation Abbé Pierre has interviewed FEANTSA Director Freek Spinnewijn for the January edition of the Et les autres? magazine. He discussed the development of Housing First and possibilities for the adopton of the model in France. Read more here

FEANTSA Policy Officer Mauro Striano discussed homelessness among EU mobile citizens in an article by Deutschlandfunk, while Project Officer Chloé Serme-Morin appeared in an article by BBC News on homelessness in Paris. Last but not least, Housing Rights Watch's Homeless Bill of Rights was signed in Móstoles, Spain. More on that here.

Call for Nominations: 2018 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize
The call for nominations for the 2018 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize has been issued. The Prize aims to reward outstanding civil society action in defending human rights in Europe and beyond. Candidates should have made a real difference to the human rights situation of a given group, been instrumental in uncovering large-scale systemic violations, or have successfully mobilised public opinion or the international community for a cause. FEANTSA urges its members to apply or to nominate other organisations that are standing up for the rights of homeless people.

Stockholm City Mission Report Calls for More Political Action Against Homelessness 
The Stockholm City Mission - member of Sweden’s National Association of City Missions (RSS) - released a report about homelessness in 2017. The report offers an overview of the current state of homelessness in Sweden, discusses national and local fighting homelessness policies and suggests policy recommendations. Read more here

BAWO Policy Paper Proposes Eleven Measures to Improve the Housing Situation in Austria

BAWO has produced a policy paper on the housing situation in Austria, based on the input of experts in the fields of housing development, housing and tenancy rights, housing politics and homelessness services. The policy paper illustrates the lack of adequate housing for low income households and suggests eleven measures to improve the housing situation in Austria. Read the whole position paper - in English - here

Focus Ireland is starting a project aimed at making greater use of digital technology in their work. They are looking for other homeless organisations that have experience with this process. Audit Reports on Homeless Services in Amsterdam and Utrecht Released 
Dutch Audit Offices are conducting research on homeless services in the four big cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague). So far, extensive reports have been released on the services in The Hague and in Amsterdam

400 Toits Campaign Releases Results from June Survey About Homelessness in Brussels  

In June 2017, a group of volunteers of the 400Toits campaign interviewed over 300 homeless people. The results of the survey were recently presented. 400Toits is a campaign aiming to provide stable housing solutions for 400 homeless people in Brussels by 2020. Wales Audit Office Evaluates Local Government Responses to Homelessness
The Wales Audit Office has released an evaluation report of local authorities' responses to homelessness. The report finds that most local authorities do not effectively design and implement prevention strategies. The Audit Office calls on local authorities to give more attention to prevention in their strategic responses to homelessness. Read the full report here


Homelessness Among Vulnerable Groups in England has Risen by 75% since 2010
According to figures released by the UK Department for Communities and Local Government, homelessness among vulnerable groups in England has risen by 75% since 2010. The number of homeless households containing someone who is classed as vulnerable because of their mental illness rose from 3,200 in 2010 to 5,470 in 2017. Read more here

Erratum

 
The December 2017 Flash included an article entitled "La Strada Calls for True Ending Homelessness Policy in Brussels with Right to Roof Campaign". This calls for a correction. The Right to a Roof campaign is supported by 80 organisations working on homelessness in Brussels and is not coordinated by La Strada.
